College is more than just something after high school. You will face a whole new world and you’re going to be faced with many decisions. It is important to consider the entire picture when making decisions about the new world into which you will enter.
Have a good supply of toiletries on hand. This is essential, as you will use them often and may run out before you know it. Shop around for good deals by buying in bulk from outlet stores when possible.
If you find out that you cannot afford to go to the college you want to go to, consider the possibility of student loans. College is a place that will help you get a high paying job later, and it’s not a bad idea to get a loan that you can later pay off.
Find the admissions office prior to picking a college. This will allow you to find out if there are scholarships available that are school specific. Many colleges provide scholarships that are available to their students. Make sure to talk to someone from the financial aid or admissions department to find out about financial aid available to you.
Wait to purchase books until after the first day of the class. Oftentimes, you will not need to purchase all of the “required” books. That is particularly the case for classes online. Simply sitting in class and listening to the professor (or accessing online materials) could be enough.
Create relationships that are positive with your professors. Professors represent an incredible resource and have lots of help to offer students. Ask questions and offer to help them. Good relationships with your teachers means more opportunities and better grades, so remember how important they are to your success.
Don’t spend your money on coffee every morning. The cost really adds up! Brew your own coffee. It’s not as tasty as Starbucks, but it’ll save you a ton. If you keep an eye out for sales, you can get a good coffee maker at a reasonable price.
Take many different electives. It will be easier to see what really grabs your attention. The first year of college is a great time to try new things and challenge yourself.
Allow yourself to take breaks. Although studying is important, it’s equally important to give yourself breaks. Every hour you study should include at least ten minutes of break time. Make a schedule and stick with it.
As you select courses, be certain not to include too many tough ones in any one semester. Overloading your schedule will not help you to learn more, but will actually cause you to learn less overall from spreading yourself too thin. Find a balance of easy and difficult classes in order to maximize your success while working toward graduation.
Now you should have a better idea of what the college experience means. It’s time to start planning. It is an important time in your life, and you want to make the most of it.
